Psalm 91: The Secret Place of the Most High

There’s something deeply comforting about Psalm 91. It’s one of the most powerful and protective passages in all of Scripture — a reminder that God’s presence is our safest refuge. Many believe Moses wrote this psalm to assure God’s children of His constant care during their long journey through the wilderness. It was written to bring peace to weary hearts, and it still does today.

Moses and the Secret Place

Psalm 91 speaks directly to those who have made the Lord their dwelling — their very life and home. God’s “secret place” is not a hidden location on earth, but His divine covering, a safe place of refuge for those who trust Him completely.

The psalmist paints a tender picture of this protection: like a mother hen gathering her chicks under her wings, so the Most High shelters His people. Beneath His wings, we find rest, deliverance, and peace from every visible and invisible enemy. His truth becomes our shield, and His presence our hiding place (Psalm 91:9).

Even angels are appointed to guard those who dwell there — a reminder of heaven’s constant watch over us (Psalm 91:11–12).

To understand this more deeply, it helps to remember that Moses — a type of Christ — was both prophet and lawgiver. When he spoke these words, he wasn’t only speaking to the Israelites of his time, but prophetically to all who would one day put their faith in Christ. Just as God used Moses to deliver His people from Pharaoh, so He sent Jesus to deliver us from the power of the enemy.

The Apostle Paul echoes this in 1 Corinthians 10:1–2, describing how the Israelites were “baptized into Moses,” following him under the cloud and through the sea — symbols pointing to the salvation we now have in Christ. Yet, Paul reminds us that not all obeyed, and some perished in the wilderness. Their story stands as a gentle warning to us today to remain steadfast in faith.

Christ: The True Secret Place

In Hebrews 3:5–6, we read,

“Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house… but Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house — whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and hope to the end.”

For those who believe in Christ, He Himself is now our secret place. We are baptized into Him — into His death, resurrection, and life (Romans 6:3). In Him, we find safety, strength, and rest.

Prophetic Promises of Psalm 91

Psalm 91:14 declares,

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.”

This is more than a promise of earthly promotion — it’s the promise of spiritual elevation. Through faith in Christ, we are raised up with Him and seated in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:5–6). Every promise of God now belongs to us in Christ — and in Him, they are “Yes” and “Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20).

The psalm closes with this tender assurance:

“With long life will I satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” (Psalm 91:16)

Jesus said it best:

“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John 11:25)

Beloved, Christ Himself is the secret place of the Most High. In Him, our lives are safely hidden with God (Colossians 3:3).

The Secret Place Is Spiritual

The secret place isn’t a physical location — it’s a spiritual position in God. (See John 17:22–23.) This truth was even revealed in Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–7). The enemy used Psalm 91 in an attempt to lure Jesus out of His spiritual place of obedience and trust in God.

But Jesus resisted, remaining anchored in His Father’s will. Likewise, when we yield to temptation, we risk stepping outside our place of safety — the spiritual covering of God’s Kingdom (Colossians 1:13).

The Church Building Is Not the Secret Place

It’s important to remember that the Body of Christ is spiritual — not confined to any physical structure. God no longer dwells in temples made with hands (Acts 7:48–49).

During the pandemic, this truth became especially clear. Many believers were misled into thinking that gathering in a physical building was the only way to remain faithful. Yet, God had already provided other ways for His people to stay connected and encouraged. The building is important, yes — but it is not the secret place. Those who are born again already dwell in Christ, the true refuge of God.

Just as during the first Passover, when the Israelites were told to stay under the covering of the lamb’s blood for protection (Exodus 12:22), we too must remain under the covering of Christ’s redeeming blood. Sometimes, obedience looks like stillness — trusting God’s timing rather than following our own impulses or public opinion.

Final Thoughts

Jesus said,

“In this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Do you believe this promise? He died and rose again so that you too could live as an overcomer through Him.

Beloved, if you haven’t yet given your life to Christ, there is no better time than now. Tomorrow is not promised — but today, His arms are open wide.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
